about

Music has always played an integral role in my life. Although many presume that my grá for music was influenced by the strong music traditions of East Clare, it was in fact my Mom who introduced me to a variety of genres from a very young age. We would listen to everything from Billy Joel and ABBA to Máire Breathnach, Séamus Begley and The Chieftains. Our house was never quiet! If the radio wasn’t on, then Mom would be playing piano for us herself. Any family gathering always ended with a sing-song or session of sorts.

At the age of seven, I started classical piano lessons in Limerick city. Meanwhile, I learned the tin-whistle at school and at my local Comhaltas branch. Dad would encourage us to practise our tunes with the promise of bringing us to ‘The Heights’ for a game of pool and a fizzy drink if we could play them off by heart! That was a major incentive for myself and my elder sister, Sinéad! By the age of ten, I decided that my musical endeavours were best suited to the piano.

During my secondary school years, my love for the piano progressed. I used play at any and every opportunity, before school, during and after! (Music was a great aul excuse to skip a few classes here and there!!!) I will always remember the day Mom gave me my first Mícheál Ó Súilléabháin album, ‘Idir Eatarthu’. I was 13 and from the moment I listened to it, I was hooked! I would play it on repeat each time hearing something new and exciting.

I completed my grades in classical piano and in the theory of music. Although I much preferred the lively nature of traditional music, this foundation greatly enhanced my understanding of musical elements such as structure, harmony, melody and rhythm. It continues to influence how I approach the arrangement of traditional Irish tunes today.

Following my Leaving Certificate, I decided to complete a BA in Irish Music and Dance at the University of Limerick where I was afforded the opportunity to further hone my playing, arrangement and composition skills.

Is mór an onóir domsa an t-albam seo a chur i láthair. I have really enjoyed compiling my own arrangements of tunes and I am delighted to finally share them with you.
